Hip Hop & The Bard

Instructions

For this TED talk we will view in class and discuss, jot down notes. You will be asked to identify and illustrate 3 big "takeaways" from this presentation. Create a 3 panel sketch with the parts you found most significant and post to your blog.

3 Big Takeaways

- iambic pentameter is the beat of your heart, sets of two, rhythm is intrinsic, music/iambic pentameter is imitating rhythm of life, heart. Good for young people/all people to understand and remember and feeling. Feeling and tonality is important to Hip Hop

- pronunciation was different, before (Shakespeare’s time) mix of Yorkshire and Cordwood (ie; ours, mood & blood *rhyme). Rich and poor chasm was larger and times had more violence. Over 90% of his audience couldn’t read or write.

- hip hop = intelligent movement. 5 elements; DJ, MC, Breakdancing, Graffiti, Intelligence. Media doesn’t portray it. Griop, rhythmic oral poet, singer, musician, custodian of history (spiritual traditions etc.) of specific culture. Hip Hop is a Culture. Until mid 90’s was normal for commercially successful rappers to talk about intellectual things (math, science, dropping knowledge, boating about intellect, etc.)& also talk about life. People decided to become the custodians of history. And example, woontang forever joined people together. Hip Hop carries power to carries power to transmute philosophy like Shakespeare. Who will be the next custodians of the future???
